ALMOST 2,000 Limerick people have been prescribed Ozempic for free under the medical card or Long Term Illness scheme for diabetes.
It’s one of the highest numbers in the country as national figures show 35,571 people were prescribed the drug last year.
Ozempic is an injectable medication for type two diabetes that helps control blood sugar but it is also used by people who pay for it privately to aid weight loss.
It also slows down how quickly food is digested.
This can lead to weight loss as the digestion process makes some feel fuller for longer.
The bill for Ozempic to the State under these schemes was €41m. It costs around €120 for a month’s supply if a patient is paying privately.
