Award-winning Connemara siblings team up with TG4 Composer of the Year
MUSIC Network opens its autumn season with a captivating new ensemble featuring the extraordinary vocal talents of Connemara siblings Séamus and Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta alongside renowned pianist and composer Ryan Molloy.
The tour, running from September 11 to 26 promises an enchanting blend of traditional and contemporary music that will transport audiences into a world of mesmerising vocal and instrumental artistry.
The trio will perform at Belltable on Saturday September 13 at 8.00pm as part of the tour.
Séamus and Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta, recently crowned Best Emerging Artists at the 2024 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, have taken the Irish music scene by storm.
Hailing from the Gaeltacht region of Connemara, the siblings are celebrated for their sean nós singing and innovative arrangements of Irish and English language songs, their distinctive vocal tones reflecting the unique musical bond that only family members can share.
The duo’s breakthrough came in 2022 when their haunting performance of the traditional lament ‘Anach Cuain’ on The Late Late Show received widespread acclaim and went viral internationally, introducing sean nós singing to audiences worldwide.
Beyond their vocal prowess, both siblings are accomplished multi-instrumentalists with numerous All-Ireland titles to their names. They have recently appeared as guest soloists with the National Symphony Orchestra at the National Concert Hall and have toured extensively across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Joining the siblings is composer and pianist Ryan Molloy, whose distinguished career spans over two decades and four continents. Recently announced as TG4 Gradam Ceoil 2024 Composer of the Year, Molloy has been nominated for RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards in both 2020 and 2021.
With contributions to over thirty albums as pianist, composer, and arranger, Molloy’s versatile repertoire encompasses everything from traditional Irish music to contemporary classical.
His collaborations read like a who’s who of Irish music, including Fergal Scahill, Seán Óg Graham, Paddy Glackin, Iarla Ó Lionáird, and orchestras such as the Ulster Orchestra and Irish Chamber Orchestra.
Molloy’s innovative approach to traditional piano performance has earned critical acclaim, with his 2019 solo recording Pianophony described as a ‘milestone’ in the genre.
His music enjoys regular airplay across BBC Radio 3, Radio Ulster, RTÉ lyric fm, Radio 1, and Raidió na Gaeltachta, as well as television broadcasts on BBC 2, UTV, and TG4.
The tour will feature two specially commissioned pieces, Oileán Mhic Dara and Inis Múscraí, composed by Molloy for Music Network and performed by the trio, adding fresh material to an already compelling programme that seamlessly weaves traditional and contemporary musical offerings.
