CCTV cameras are urgently needed in Garryowen to deter anti-social behaviour and crime.
That’s according to Fianna Fรกil TD Willie O’Dea, who, together with Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon (FF), started a campaign a number of years ago to secure cameras to deal with an anti-social behaviour in Garryowen.
The pair are now pushing the Garda Commissioner for a decision.
“Unfortunately, it is a long process and it it now with the Garda Commissioner for approval,” Deputy O’Dea told the Limerick Post.
“Gardaรญ organise regular patrols in Garryowen and particular areas are being targeted for special attention. However, the Gardaรญ can’t be present in Garryowen day and night and need the proposed CCTV cameras in order to make sure that the perpetrators of anti-social behaviour and crime will be deterred and prosecuted, if necessary.
“I am leaving no stone unturned and I’m pushing the Garda Commissioner for an early decision, which I hope will be forthcoming very soon,” he added.
Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon, who is from the area, pointed out that Garryowen is a very settled community, with a small number of people causing trouble.
“At present there is only one CCTV camera in Garryowen, which I pushed to have installed about 10 years ago. This is now completely inadequate and we need many more cameras to cover the whole area properly. It has been a long process, but I am hopeful that the end is in sight and that the Commissioner will approve the proposed CCTV scheme soon,โ Cllr OโHanlon said.
