CONCERNS over the possibility of the city’s crack cocaine crisis spilling over into the county have seen one local representative call for pre-emptive measures.

Speaking to the Limerick Post this week, Cathaoirleach of the Cappamore Kilmallock Municipal District, Cllr Gregory Conway, said he was deeply worried about the problem spreading into county towns.

Cllr Conway believes that now more than ever the Garda Drug Unit needs to be reinstated in County Limerick.

“The County Limerick Drug Unit has not been operating for some time now and it is very worrying when we see what is happening in our communities. We have open drug dealing on a daily basis on our streets,” he claimed.

“We have gangland feuds and turf wars in our communities around the county with shots being fired, cars being rammed off the road, violent assaults, break-ins and intimidation by youths on our streets.”

While he welcomed news of 20 new Gardaรญ deployed to Limerick City, he called for experienced members of the force to be transferred to a new county drug unit.

“As cathaoirleach of the Cappamore Kilmallock Area, I have recently been in touch with the Minister for Justice’s office and the new Garda Commissioner’s office hoping that they could engage with each other and see their way in reopening the County Limerick drug unit,” Cllr Conway told this newspaper.

“We need this drug unit reinstated in the county and I encourage people to raise the issue with their elected representatives.”
