LIMERICK Musical Society will present ‘Michael Collins – A Musical Drama’ at University Concert Hall in March 2026, following recent successes with ‘Titanic’, ‘Oliver’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.
The production, staged by arrangement with the Michael Collins Production Trust, promises to deliver a gripping portrayal of Ireland’s turbulent historical period through music, song and emotion. The musical drama premiered at Cork Opera House in 2008 and was created by Bryan Flynn, who died in 2014 at a young age.
Director Des Henn describes it as “a very special, moving, and dynamic piece of musical theatre which brings the 1916 Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War to life while also telling a beautiful and moving love story.” Musical Director Michael Young notes the production features “truly beautiful, epic, passionate and moving numbers with magnificent harmonies”, including ‘Fly the Flag of Freedom’ and ‘Every Heart Awaken’. The show is sometimes described as the Irish ‘Les Misérables’.
This production is in the capable hands of the talented production team: Des Henn (Director including production movement) and LMS also extends a warm welcome to Michael Young (Musical Director including choral work)
The production requires a large cast with significant male participation for both chorus and leading roles, reflecting the historical period’s demands. The society is seeking dedicated performers to form a strong ensemble capable of handling the demanding choral arrangements.
An information evening will take place on Thursday September 18 at 8pm in the People’s Museum (Blue Gallery Ballroom), 2 Pery Square, Limerick. Attendees will meet the production team, discuss rehearsal plans and learn about audition dates, with a Q&A session to follow.
Auditions for leading roles will be held on October 18 at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.
