MONDAY September 15 was a milestone day for healthcare in Limerick as the new €213million Bon Secours hospital opened its doors for the first time.

It is hoped the new private hospital will help relieve some of the pressure on overburdened public services across the Mid West region.

Opening its doors to patients for the first time this past Monday, the Bon Secours Limerick, located in Ballysimon, launched the first private cardiac cath lab in the Mid West.

The state-of-the-art new private hospital will see a phased opening, beginning with the relocation of the new cardiac catheterisation laboratory, to be followed in the coming weeks by additional surgical operations and related specialities.

In the months ahead, the new €213m hospital will open services in cardiology, respiratory medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, dermatology, and advanced diagnostic imaging.

The Bon Secours Clinical Services Hub, adjacent to the new hospital, will also offer cardiology, vascular, and neurology diagnostics, as well as outpatient imaging services in partnership with Alliance Medical – along with the Mid West’s first PET-CT scanner due to come online in the coming months.

According to a Bon Secours spokesperson, Monday’s opening marks “one of the largest healthcare investments ever made in the region” and “the first new acute hospital build in Ireland in nearly two decades”.

Bon Secours group CEO Alan Sharp said that the opening reflects “our long-term commitment to expand access to high-quality care, supporting medical innovation and creating meaningful employment opportunities in the Mid West”.

“This new hospital embodies our mission to bring world-class, compassionate healthcare to the communities we serve.”

Bon Secours Limerick CEO Jason Kenny added that Monday was “a historic day for Limerick and the Mid West as we welcome our very first patients to this world-class facility”.

“From day one, patients will benefit from access to cutting-edge technology and expert care. This hospital will not only help transform healthcare delivery, but it will also create strong and sustainable career opportunities for hundreds of healthcare professionals in the region.”

The Bon Secours system, the spokesperson said, has over 4,000 staff and 500 consultants treating more than 400,000 patients each year at its give acute hospitals in Limerick, Cork, Galway, Tralee, and Dublin.
