LIMERICK councillors this Wednesday (September 17) will hear from 14 prospective candidates in the bid to become the next President of Ireland.

The hopeful candidates will be seeking to put their best foot forward in the hopes of impressing the elected members of Limerick City and County Council enough to garner a nomination.

The prospective candidates will each give a five minute address to the gathered Council members, with a further five minutes apiece for questions from the floor.

The meeting will be held in private, with no media allowed access.

Each speaker will present their case for the members to support them in securing a nomination for the election to the Áras.

The date for the 2025 Presidential Election has been set for October 24 and, so far, a number of high profile names have already pulled out of the race – including former MMA fighter Conor McGregor, who Limerick councillors recently said was “not fit to run”.

Five local authorities have already declined to nominate any Independent candidate for the upcoing election, including Cork City Council, Galway City Council, Longford County Council, Roscommon County Council, and Laois County Council.

Despite today’s canvassing, the ultimate decision on a nomination from Limerick will take place at a full Council meeting on Monday (September 22).

Those going before Limerick councillors include William P Allen, Tony Corrigan, Nick Delehanty, Donncha MacGabhann, Kieran McCarthy, Keith McGrory, Diarmaid Mulcahy, Charlotte Keenan, Catherine Morrissey, Conor O’Brien, Walter Ryan-Purcell, Dr Cora Stack, Maria Steen, and Gerben Uunk – who also ran in last year’s Limerick mayoral election.
