A PROPOSED pedestrian and school safety improvement scheme for Garryowen has been deemed a significant step forward in enhancing safety and accessibility for residents, school children, and commuters.
Labour councillor Pádraigh Reale welcomed the proposed scheme, which will include a series of targeted interventions designed to improve pedestrian safety and traffic management throughout Garryowen.
Key elements of the proposal include the installation of five new pedestrian crossings; improving accessibility and safety for all road users; traffic calming build-outs to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance the pedestrian environment; and permit parking improvements, including the introduction and removal of permit parking spaces at various locations.
The scheme will also see the reconfiguration of traffic flow to a one-way system on Pennywell Upper, Ball Alley Place (Sarsfield Court), and Cathedral Court.
There will be junction tightening at several locations to reduce turning speeds and improve visibility for road users.
Enhanced school safety features including visual elements such as bollards and road markings at two school sites to highlight the presence of children and promote safer driving will also be included in the scheme.
“These improvements will make a real difference for families, school communities, pedestrians, and commuters across Garryowen, especially in ensuring safer routes to school better and safer traffic flow. It’s a positive step for the entire community,” Cllr Reale said.
Public consultation on the proposed improvements is currently open and will remain so until September 19. Residents are encouraged to review the plans and submit their feedback.
