TAXATION, consumer rights, legal support, family services. For the last 45 years plus, Limerick Citizens Information Centre has been giving free advice on everything from changing a faulty toaster to where to see legal help in a marriage break-up.

Citizens Information Ireland was last week celebrating 50 years of providing trusted, accessible information to people and communities across the city and the county of Limerick and the rest of Ireland.

A special celebration was held at the organisation’s Limerick base on Henry Street in the city, attended by Mayor of Limerick John Moran, staff, and volunteers past and present, board members, and community partners.

While Citizens Information in Limerick has not yet reached the 50-year milestone, the service has been a vital part of the community and voluntary sector for more than 45 years.

Over that time, it has become an essential support for people across the city, county, and wider North Munster region.

Since 2009 alone, Citizens Information offices in Limerick, Kilmallock, and Newcastle West supported 332,496 people, dealt with over 560,000 queries, and provided advocacy for more than 10,000 individuals.

“These are phenomenal figures, and they show the scale and importance of this work,” said Tracey Reddy, development manager of the centre.

The celebration placed a strong emphasis on recognising the people who have shaped and sustained the service – its staff, volunteers, and boards of management.

Special thanks were extended to long-standing outreach partners including Croom Family Resource Centre, Community Law and Mediation, Threshold, and West Limerick Resources, as well as to specialist volunteers who have provided free clinics on family law, taxation, legal matters, and more.

Tributes were also paid to colleagues who have passed away in the past year, including Noel Bourke, Michael McGaune, and Tony King, whose contributions helped shape the service over decades.

Citizens Information provides free, impartial, and confidential information, advice, and advocacy on a broad range of public and social services.

With centres across Ireland, the service helps people access their rights and entitlements, supporting individuals and communities with fairness and inclusion at its core.
