RESIDENTS in Alandale Estate, off the Dock Road in Limerick Cty, are “driven to distraction” by an illegal encampment along both sides of the road.

That’s according to Labour Party councillor Joe Leddin, who called on the Council to introduce double yellow lines along the road to prevent persistent illegal parking.

Speaking at September’s Metropolitan District meeting, Cllr Leddin said: “There is significant green fields in the area and those sites are subject to development at some future stage. I want to acknowledge the work done by our colleagues in the Traveller Accommodation Unit, but we’ve persistent problems here with illegal parking on the footpaths by travellers at the top of it by the roundabout.”

“We have illegal parking by businesses on the Dock Road with vans and trucks as well, causing significant issues for people either walking or trying to drive along that area.”

The City West representative pointed out that, from his conversations with Gardaรญ, the main issue is that the road is not marked.

“If there’s no markings, such as double yellows, the powers of the Gardaรญ are quite limited in terms of enforcement. The residents are absolutely driven to distraction and the local businesses all have issues,” Cllr Leddin said.

Independent councillor Maria Donoghue seconded Cllr Leddin’s motion.

In response to Cllr Leddin, the Council said that, in principle, the Roads Department did not have any issue with his proposal, adding that “An Garda Siochana will have to be also consulted before it can be implemented”.
