HSE gives free lessons in how to save a life from suicide

IT’S a terrifying situation to be confronted with someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts, with those put in the scenario wondering best to say or do.

Now, the HSE is highlighting its award-winning โ€˜Letโ€™s Talk About Suicideโ€™ training, which gives guidance in steps to take to help save lives.

The programme provides is a free, online suicide prevention training.

‘Letโ€™s Talk About Suicide’ teaches suicide prevention skills, how to spot signs, and support someone.

John Meehan, HSE assistant national director of access and integration and head of the National Office for Suicide Prevention, said that โ€œsadly over 500 people lose their lives to suicide in Ireland, it can affect every one of us”.

“By raising awareness and encouraging a culture of compassion, openness and support, we can help to reduce silence, related stigma, and help save lives.”

He added that the training initiative “takes just 60 minutes, and Iโ€™d encourage people to sign up today”.

“Whether in personal or professional settings, each and every one of us can play a part in helping reduce suicide in our communities.”

Professionals recommend steps for people to support themselves and others, including taking time to connect with loved ones, and people around us. A simple check-in can bring hope and make a real difference.

“Be kind, your words matter โ€“ speak with kindness and empathy when talking about suicide. Everyone affected โ€“ whether theyโ€™ve lost someone or struggled themselves โ€“ deserves dignity and respect,” a HSE spokesman said.

“Stay safe online โ€“ share information about suicide or self-harm responsibly and supportively. Help create a safer, more sensitive online space for everyone.

“Help is available if you need it โ€“ familiarise yourself with local and national supports and services. Knowing where to turn can make a meaningful difference.”

Further suicide prevention training programmes from the HSE are also available, including TsafeTALK, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), Understanding Self-harm, and Suicide Bereavement Workshops.
