LIMERICK Celtics made the best possible start to life in the Domino’s Men’s Super League, defeating Ballincollig 88-87 on their top flight debut.
Finn Hughes jump shot in the closing seconds secured victory in front of a packed UL Arena.
Celtics head coach Tony Hehir said he was “delighted to get the win against a very experienced and talented Ballincollig team”.
“The atmosphere in UL Arena was electric and our Celtics fans really brought the best out of the lads’ in the closing minutes to take the win in our first ever Super League game for Limerick Celtics.”
The returning Abdul Wurie and AJ Williams had 21 and 18 points respectively for Limerick Celtics, while their new American Austin Rotroff posted 20 points and 14 rebounds for the victors. Latrell Jossell top scored for Ballincollig on 23 points.
In the Women’s Division One derby, Celtics edged-out Limerick Sport Huskies, 76-69.
For the winners, good scores came from Katie Black (21), Sidney Richards (19) and captain Sabhbh Edwards Murphy (10).
