LIMERICK Senator Dee Ryan expressed serious concern following a meeting of the Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence, which examined the impact of artificial intelligence on young people.

The Committee heard testimony from a variety of organisations representing young people, parents, and advocacy groups, highlighting pressing risks and harms linked to AI technologies.

“There are grave concerns about recommender systems serving hateful or harmful content, exposing children to risks no parent would wish for.

“We also heard strong warnings about the threat of AI-generated deep-fakes being used to target or exploit young people, and about the fast-rising use of AI chatbots by children, with emerging harms that we are only beginning to understand. These issues demand urgent attention,” Senator Ryan said.
