Limerick records annual decrease in motor thefts

The CSO figures come following a 12-year high for motor theft last year. Despite the dip, the figures are significantly ahead of pre-pandemic levels when 2,439 offences were recorded in 2019.

LIMERICK saw a 30 per cent decrease in motor thefts in the past year, with just 215 reported compared to 309 in 2024.

The drop is in line with a 13 per cent reduction across the country, and a total of 3,472 motor thefts nationally.

The CSO figures come following a 12-year high for motor theft last year. Despite the dip, the figures are significantly ahead of pre-pandemic levels when 2,439 offences were recorded in 2019.

In the meantime, the public are warned to remain vigilant and keep their vehicle as secure as possible.

OUTsurance, the Irish based car insurance company, recommend advise drivers to invest in an immobiliser or install CCTV or motion sensor lighting at home.
