INDEPENDENT Limerick councillor Ursula Gavan has welcomed news of a new Garda Station for Castletroy, but has called for guarantees that Castleconnell Garda Station will remain open once the Castletroy station is established.
Cllr Gavan said the confirmation of Castletroy Garda Station was long overdue and a positive development for the area, expressing hope that the station will enhance Garda visibility and response times in one of Limerick’s fastest growing areas.
“We now need to see a site identified and planning submitted in the coming months. This should not be a long drawn out process where we have several ‘announcements’ and no actual progress,” she commented.
“While I welcome the investment in Castletroy. I urge the Garda Commissioner to keep Castleconnell Garda Station open for community policing purposes. Our local station has served our community well for years and gives us a strong sense of safety and community. It’s crucial that it remains open as a community driven service,” Cllr Gavan added.
Speaking in the Dáil this week, Limerick TD and Minister of State at the Justice Department, Niall Collins, welcomed the announcement in Budget 2026 of funding for the construction of new stations at Castletroy and Newcastle West.
“I acknowledge the €390million capital budget available to us, which will go towards many capital works, such as the finish and fit-out of the new Garda district headquarters in my constituency, in Newcastle West, and also to fund the ongoing planning of a new Garda station in Castletroy,” he said.
