MayKay, best known as frontwoman of Fight Like Apes and later Le Galaxie, has released her self-titled debut solo album on her own imprint, GrainStore Records.

The singer will celebrate the launch with an instore performance at Steamboat Records this Saturday, 18th October.

The nine-track record marks a departure from her high-energy collaborative work, offering something tender, personal and grounded in honesty. Written in her late father’s grain store on his Kildare farm whilst processing grief and the complexities of various relationships, the songs emerged quickly as an unburdened expression of connections building, falling apart and enduring.

Completed four years ago, the album has remained in what MayKay describes as a “liminal gestation” until now. The result is a charm bracelet of genres spanning country, pop, new wave and more, preceded by debut solo single “Busted”.

MayKay burst onto the international scene with Fight Like Apes, touring with The Prodigy and supporting Yeah Yeah Yeahs at festivals including Glastonbury and South by Southwest. She joined electronic act Le Galaxie as frontwoman in 2017 and has collaborated with Jerry Fish, Kormac, Elaine Mai, Jack O’Rourke and Ailbhe Reddy, amongst others.

Since 2015, she has presented Ireland’s Other Voices music series alongside BBC presenters Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, interviewing artists including Little Simz, Mark Lanegan and David Gray.
