A LIMERICK City man was remanded at the Limerick Circuit Criminal Court in continuing custody for sentencing at a later date after he pleaded guilty to possession of a submachine-gun and ammunition.

Willie Woodland (31), of Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty, Limerick City, was charged with having the gun and ammunition at his home address on Tuesday September 3, 2024.

The gun, a 9 x 18mm Makarov calibre, Rak make, model PM63 submachine-gun, was seized by Gardaí, under Section 27A (1) of the Firearms Act, 1964.

The court heard that the ammunition seized includes a quantity of 9 x18mm Makrov Calibre ammunition, which Mr Woodland was charged with possessing for an unlawful purpose, also contrary to Section 27A (1) of the Firearms Act, 1964.

Gardaí told the court at the time that Mr Woodland did not respond when charged with the offences.

Prosecution barrister Lily Buckley, BL, told Limerick Circuit Criminal Court last Friday (October 10) that no evidence had been heard in the case.

Ms Buckley told the court sitting that Mr Woodland had been in custody since his arrest in September of last year.

Judge Colin Daly, hearing the case, remanded Mr Woodland in continuing custody on the charges to appear before Limerick Circuit Court, for evidence to be heard, on Friday October 17.
