LIMERICK councillors have welcomed news that, together with Clare, the Treaty City, has been selected to host EuroPride 2028 – the largest Pride event ever to take place on the island of Ireland.

Cathaoirleach of the Council’s Metropolitan District, Cllr Daniel Butler, said he believes this remarkable achievement is a testament to the passion, creativity, and determination of Limerick’s LGBTQIA+ community and to the spirit of inclusivity that defines Limerick.

“Over the years, I have had the privilege of standing alongside our LGBTQIA+ community in advocating for equality, visibility, and acceptance,” he said.

“During my time as Mayor of Limerick, I was proud to champion initiatives that celebrated diversity and strengthened our city’s reputation as a place where everyone is welcome and valued. To see Limerick now recognised on the European stage in this way is deeply meaningful — both personally and for our wider community,” Cllr Butler told the Limerick Post.

The Fine Gael man considers EuroPride, which has been long been associated with major European capitals, and its arrival to Limerick as marking a transformative moment for the West of Ireland.

“This victory reflects not only the dedication of Limerick Pride, QuareClare, and The Outing Queer Arts Collective and Festival, but also the strong collaboration with Fáilte Ireland, Visit Clare, Blacknight, Goudie Talent, and The George. Together, they have shown that the heart and soul of Ireland’s Pride movement beats proudly here in the Mid West.”

The former Mayor said that “hosting EuroPride 2028 will shine a global spotlight on Limerick’s vibrant culture, creativity, and hospitality, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Wild Atlantic Way”.

“It will bring tens of thousands of visitors from across Europe and beyond, creating opportunities not only for celebration but also for meaningful cultural exchange and economic growth.

“10 years after Ireland made history by becoming the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote, this announcement reminds us how far we have come — and how far we can still go together.”

Council Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery, said she was “thrilled” at this bid’s success.

“This is not just a win for Limerick and Clare. It is a win for everyone who believes in inclusion, equality, visibility, and community.”

Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara was equally elated, saying the region’s winning the big is “testament to the work, preparation and drive of the combined team from Limerick Pride, The Outing Festival, and Quare Clare”.

“This will be an extraordinary opportunity for Europe to see Limerick shine as a beacon of inclusivity, solidarity, and creativity. Congratulations to all who made this happen. Let’s get ready to welcome Europe to our beautiful city,” Cllr Hickey-O’Mara concluded.
