TWENTY TWO abandoned horses were sized across the whole of Limerick city and county so far this year – coming in at the fourth highest number of any county in Ireland.
That’s according to figures provided to Limerick Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan by Minister for Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, Martin Heydon. Minister Heydon’s figures were provided by each county’s local authorities.
The county with the highest number of abandoned horses seized so far this year is Cork with 50, followed by Dublin (34) and Tipperary (26).
The Minister said that local authorities may take a range of actions to combat the abandonment of horses, including prohibiting them in certain areas, issuing licences, and seizing them under the Control of Horses Act, 1996.
