Mixed results in local basketball

BELFAST Star came back from 18 points down in the third quarter to defeat Limerick Celtics 81-73 in the Domino’s Men’s Super League at the weekend.

A Celtics side led by the duo of Abdul Wurie and AJ Williams started the game well and really hammered home their impressive first half performance by going in at half-time up by 14 points, but as the third wore on and as we entered the final ten minutes of the game, Star quietly chewed away at the Celtics’ lead and would eventually be rewarded with a lead with eight minutes left.

Once Star went in front, there was no going back.

In Division One, Limerick Sport Eagles got their season back on track with a 71-69 win against Templeogue in Tallaght. The trio of Ryan Leonard, Alex Carlisle and Tobias Christensen scored a combined 56 of Limericks 71 points to push them to a 2-1 start to the season. Leonard scored 20 points, Carlisle got 15 including the game-winning score, and Christiansen grabbed 21 along with 8 rebounds.

In Women’s Division One, Celtics registered an impressive 62-44 win at Galway Mystics.

Sabhbh Edwards-Murphy hit 12 points and nine rebounds and Sydney Richard shot 12 points and six assists.

Amy Buckley played outstanding defence with four blocks and hit nine points.

Aoife Morrissey’s pace troubled Galway all game and she chipped in with seven points . Katie Black contributed an incredible stat line of 19 rebounds, four steals, two assists, a block, along with eight points.

Aishling Jordan scored 7 points also.

Elsewhere, Limerick Sport Huskies opened their win account as they got to 1-2 with a 76-69 triumph over Cleveland Rockets in Lisburn.

Clara Gomez and Shelby Harmeyer scored 18 each with Gomez also grabbing 21 boards and 10 assists to get the win up north.
