A MAN who had the services of an interpreter provided for him to face charges in Limerick District Court made no response, even when the judge told him she might have to send him to prison.

Andris Muleniers (66) made no reply to the charges put to him in the court room, despite proceedings being interpreted for him.

The man, a Latvian national, is accused of trespass and refusing to give a name and address to Gardaí.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican was told that he was “unresponsive” when arrested he had not yet made any plea in relation to any of the charges,

He remained silent and didn’t answer when Judge Coolican asked if he wanted the services of a solicitor to represent him in court.

Nor did he make any reply when Judge Coolican told him that if he did not speak to the court, she would have to agree to the Garda request that he be remanded in custody.

Asked by the prosecution that he be remanded in custody, Judge Coolican said “if he continues to refuse to engage, we will be in the same situation next time”.

Judge Coolican remanded him in custody with consent to bail if he produces evidence of a confirmed name and address.

She also directed he receive any necessary medical attention while being held in the jail, remanding him to appear again on November 20 for the case to be heard and ordered an official interpreter be present in court to assist him.
