AN application for CCTV at the Castletroy Urban Greenway remains under review by the Garda Commissioner’s team, Limerick councillors have been told.

The Council submitted the application in August last year under Section 38 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005. At October’s Metropolitan District meeting, Councillor Elena Secas asked for an update.

Cllr Secas was told by the local authority that the Garda Commissioner’s team have requested some additional information, which it considers a “positive sign” the application is being assessed.

“We’re hopeful that a response will be forthcoming soon,” the Council said.

Earlier this year, Fianna Fáil councillor Joe Pond urged the local authority to block access to the Castletroy Urban Greenway to alleviate anti-social behaviour at apartment blocks in Newtown Meadows.

At a May meeting of the Metropolitan District, Cllr Pond called on the local authority to engage with Cluid Housing to examine what measures could be taken to protect residents in two Castletroy apartment buildings. One lady, he said, witnessed an attempt to steal a motorbike, in broad daylight, belonging to another resident parked out in front of the building.

Green Party councillor Séan Hartigan cautioned Council members at the time about being alarmist, saying: “I have sympathy for the people who are suffering from anti-social behaviour. Now most of the things outlined by Joe were involving nine to 13-year-olds and it involved kids knocking on doors and running away and that sort of thing. We’re not dealing with the South Bronx.”
