In light of the shocking Shannonside figures, insurance broker Gallagher has warned homeowners and drivers that seasonal vigilance is essential, especially as the darker autumn evenings close in.

Gallagher warned homeowners to install a monitored alarm and security cameras, keep doors and windows locked even while at home, avoid sharing travel plans on social media, and consider joining a neighbourhood watch programme.

For elderly people, Gallagher recommended fitting a door viewer or chain and ensuring neighbours have emergency contact details.
