TRANSPORT Infrastructure Ireland (TII) was urged to provide funding for emergency safety works on the Devon Road Cross junction in Templeglantine following a recent fatality.

Speaking at November’s Newcastle West area meeting, Fine Gael councillor Liam Galvin said these works are imperative in light of a number of road crashes.

Following a fatality on October 18, Cllr Galvin called for quick action to prevent further loss of life.

“I sincerely hope that TII will see fit to intervene expeditiously to ensure that no other family will find themselves in a similarly tragic situation due to the danger currently posed by this junction,” he told Council management.

The Council, Cllr Galvin was informed, appointed Barry Transportation in 2019 to develop measures on safety issues at Devon Cross, on the N21 between Abbeyfeale and Templeglantine.

“Following consultations with TII and Mid West National Road Design Office (MWNRDO), Barry Transportation completed a feasibility report which recommended the construction of a staggered junction at Devon Cross as the preferred option to improve safety at this location. This feasibility report was submitted to TII in 2020, and Limerick City and County Council requested TII’s approval to progress the scheme.

“Funding was not allocated to progress the scheme at the time, however, some funding was allocated for additional signage on the approach to the N21,” said Fiona Kelliher, MWNRDO senior executive engineer.

She told Cllr Galvin that MWNRDO recently corresponded with TII with an updated feasibility report requesting funding and approval to progress the scheme to detailed design and construction.
