FINE Gael councillor Olivia O’Sullivan has welcomed the naming of the Parish Field as the location for a new Caherdavin Playground, which will itself be transformed into a neighbourhood park.
Cllr O’Sullivan told the Limerick Post that negotiations are “progressing well” to secure the Parish Field as the location for the new Caherdavin Playground and neighbourhood park.
“There won’t just be a playground, but a neighbourhood park developed for the local community, something that has been lacking in this area for its growing population,” the City North representative commented.
“I have already secured €410,000 for a playground, the first €100k coming from the Northside councillors of the last Council term who supported me in this proposal. All of that ring-fenced funding will go towards this playground and park project.”
Cllr O’Sullivan deemed the Parish Field as an ideal location, being a lockable amenity beside the local primary schools, the church, the scout hall, and the Credit Union.
“This area is already a centre of local activity. The schools have been consulted and are supportive,” she said.
“Caherdavin Celtic FC already have the use of the Parish Field for training, and they have been consulted on the project also to make sure all the local organisations are working in tandem with the Council to make this work.
“I would like to say a particular thank you to the Limerick Diocese and Fr Pat O’Sullivan of Christ the King Parish Caherdavin. Without the Diocese’s agreement this project would not be possible. Thank you also to everyone involved in Limerick City and County Council Parks Department in getting the plans to this stage.”
The project will include works to improve access and safety for the Redgate Road entrance and a car park area.
The Council had previously selected two other locations for the Caherdavin Playground, which were later deemed unsuitable, so it is now hoped this third location will prove a location worth waiting for.
“It has taken us a long time to get here, I am six years fundraising for it and working with the Council to see it progress. This location at the Parish Field, if managed right, will be a wonderful park and recreational amenity for the locality,” Cllr O’Sullivan concluded.
