A MOTION was pucked around at a Council meeting for a civic reception to be held in honour of five-time All-Ireland winning senior hurling captain Declan Hannon.

The three-time All-Star recently announced, after 15 years of representing Limerick, his decision to retire from inter-county hurling.

Fianna Fáil councillor Bridie Collins now wants Limerick City and County Council to mark the Adare man’s contribution at both club and county level.

Speaking at this month’s Adare-Rathkeale District meeting, Cllr Collins said she believed a call for a civic reception for Declan Hannon was well deserved considering his sporting achievements.

Cllr Collins was told by Council management that a reception could be held at County Hall in Dooradoyle but would need to be opened up to all 40 elected members of the local authority.

Director of Adare-Rathkeale District, Vincent Murray, suggested they could have a joint district and full Council reception.

Cllr Adam Teskey (FG) felt it was only right that the “magnificent” hurling great should also be honoured with a mayoral reception.

“He’s lead our team to some fantastic victories and taken this county to what would be considered through history as historic successful victories,” Cllr Teskey enthused.

His fellow Fine Gael member, Cllr Stephen Keary, felt it was best that the full Council took the reins on the civic reception so that “the local office wouldn’t be saddled with the cost”.

“I think it should take place in Dooradoyle. These things can eat up money, you know yourself,” he commented.
