FINE Gael councillor and Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District of Limerick, Daniel Butler, welcomed ongoing improvement works across the city’s laneways.
Part of a long-term vision to revitalise and reconnect key pedestrian routes throughout Limerick, works are currently underway at Glentworth Mews, focusing on road surface, drainage, and lighting upgrades to improve access and usability for both residents and local businesses.
Following the completion of this phase, similar enhancement works will begin on Limerick Lane, just off Little Catherine Street.
“Looking ahead, the broader vision includes exploring a future connection from Limerick Lane through to Foxes Bow, creating a more cohesive and accessible network of laneways in the city centre,” Cllr Butler told the Limerick Post.
“The next laneways scheduled for attention will be Theatre Lane, adjacent to Freddy’s Bistro and The Glen Tavern, where improvement works will continue the effort to upgrade key pedestrian corridors and encourage greater footfall through the heart of Limerick.”
A ‘Laneways Toolkit’ — designed to guide and support these interventions — will be launched in the coming weeks, providing a structured approach to reimagining and maintaining Limerick’s smaller streets and passageways.
Cllr Butler confirmed that a list of lanes for both minor interventions and major works will be announced in Q1 2026.
“Our laneways are an integral part of Limerick’s identity and urban fabric. By continuing to invest in them, we’re creating safer, more attractive, and better-connected spaces that benefit both residents and local businesses,” Cllr Butler said.
