MEMBERS of Limerick City and County Council unanimously agreed to host a civic reception for five-time All-Ireland winning senior hurling captain Declan Hannon.
At the recent full meeting of the local authority, PrÃomh Chomhairleoir Cllr Catherine Slattery proposed that an event take place in his honour.
This came on the back of a motion at last month’s Adare-Rathkeale District meeting from Fianna Fáil councillor Bridie Collins to mark Hannon’s iconic achievements.
“Declan’s been a huge stalwart to hurling. He’s given us great entertainment, and he’s given us great joy for a number of decades,” Cllr Collins enthused.
“I look forward to working with yourself, Mayor Moran, and the executive to host this night. I’m not sure where we’re going to hold it. I’m not sure if this room is going to be big enough actually to host it,” she told Cllr Slattery in the Dooradoyle Council chambers. “But look, it would be an honour for us to have a civic reception for Declan.”
Fine Gael councillor John Sheahan said his party would also like to be associated with the proposal for the former Limerick hurling great.
“We will leave the accolades until the night. Well done,” he said.
Limerick Mayor John Moran congratulated councillors in the Adare-Rathkeale District for bringing the motion forward.
“I had already contacted Declan about a mayoral reception but I think it is more fitting that we have a civic reception, so I’m more than happy to lend my support to that,” Moran Moran said
