COUNCILLORS have called for a special meeting on Limerick’s local authority’s Corporate Plan 2025-2029.

Developed through an inclusive, organisation-wide approach, the Council said, the corporate plan has been prepared taking account of the mayoral programme and policies and objectives set out in other plans. It has been tailored to the specific corporate needs of the Council as the only democratic platform for Limerick.

According to the Council, the global pandemic caused major disruption over the course of the last plan, driving integrated responses and changes in how it works and communicates. The new plan, it says, has been designed to allow the Council to adapt to emerging international and national challenges, changing priorities, and the reallocation of resources throughout its duration.

Speaking at the recent full meeting of Limerick City and County Council, Fine Gael councillor Sarah Kiely took the view that local authority members now need to go through the plan to “make sure it is right”.

She called for a workshop or special meeting to be convened to discuss the document, which provides a strategic framework for the actions of the city and county over the next five-year period.

Cllr Kiely told Council management that it would be “silly” to move forward without “drilling down into it to make sure it is right”.

Cllr Dan McSweeney (FG) asked Corporate Services to make an independent facilitator available to assist local representatives in understanding the plan and in proposing any amendments, if required.

Council Director General Dr Pat Daly said that ideally they would like to organise a workshop before Christmas due to limits on department sanctions. He also agreed to accommodate councillors with an independent facilitator.

“I think they’d be very happy we’re making progress, but it also has affects on the manpower plan, plus on the services plan, but we need to do that as soon as possible,” he insisted.
