LABOUR councillor Pádraigh Reale has called for safety measures on the pedestrian crossing on the Corbally Road.

According to the City North representative, urgent action is now needed on this pedestrian crossing near Athlunkard Bridge on the outskirts of the city.

This crossing, providing a key link between the Shannon Fields walkway and the Red Path walkway, Cllr Reale warned, is dangerous with cars approaching at speed and not stopping in time for pedestrians.

He hit out following a recent serious accident at the bridge, “and this not the first time there has been an incident at this crossing”, he told the Limerick Post.

“Something needs to be put in place to slow traffic on the approach to and at this pedestrian crossing. Funding must be sought from the National Transport Authority for a safety scheme at this location,” he added.

“If you look at the design guidelines at a national policy level, the hierarchy of road user’s places pedestrians first and this is not the case in relation to this particular crossing.”

Cllr Reale is now calling urgently for a review into this crossing with a view to the Council seeking funding for safety measures on this pedestrian crossing.

In response, the Council said that the pedestrian crossing near Athlunkard Bridge will be re-constructed as part of the Active Travel Corbally Road Project, adding that “the works are underway on the Corbally Road and Limerick City and County Council will look to prioritise the crossing.”
