Limerick Suicide Watch was formed in 2016. The goal of Limerick Suicide Watch is to prevent suicide by the River Shannon in Limerick City. We meet our objectives by patrolling at least four nights per week.

We also endeavor to raise awareness of the issue of suicide and its prevalence in our locality. It’s not just about prevention however, we are also a listening ear to members of the community who are struggling with their mental health and/ or day-to-day pressures of life. When we go out on patrol we hope to get members

of the public home safely. If people are in a vulnerable position, we will do our best to ensure their safety.

Currently we have approximately 60 members who come from all backgrounds and have different reasons for volunteering with Limerick Suicide Watch and we are actively recruiting for new members. In order to ensure volunteers’ safety, we equip them with the skills required to carry out our goals.

We provide all necessary and relevant training, this includes throw bag training, water side safety training, first

aid & defibrillator training, and child protection awareness training. Each volunteer is expected to complete “Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training” (ASIST) provided by the HSE.

Limerick Suicide Watch is entirely funded by public donations are we are very fortunate to have such fantastic support from the public and local business, without whom, we could not possibly do what we do.

We are eternally grateful for the support we receive from the people of Limerick and beyond.
