A Christmas message from County Limerick politicians

CHRISTMAS is a magical time that evokes wonderful childhood memories.

As one corny festive bumper sticker indicated, “Christmas presents come and go. Christmas memories last a lifetime.

The Limerick Post recently reached out to some of County Limerick’s hardest working politicians to take a festive walk down memory lane with them.

Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan tells me that Christmas was a very special time in his house growing up.

“My late mother went to huge rounds in the weeks running up to Christmas to get the house ready. Christmas cakes were made for the gifts and a tree had to be bought. It was a time of year when my late father would take a badly needed break and we would binge watch tv with proper tins of Roses on the couch,” Minister O’Donovan recalled.

The Newcastle West politician, who has had a busy year since taking up his new ministerial role wished all his constituents “a very happy and Peaceful Christmas”.

Sinn Fein senator and mother of four Joanne Collins, says that for her, Christmas has always been about family. The Cappagh, Askeaton native believes that while gifts are lovely, they’ll never matter as much as the time spent with the people you love and the memories you make together.

“One of my favourite parts of Christmas is putting up the Christmas tree. We always have it up in time for the Toy Show or I’m a Celebrity, whichever comes first. It’s the simple, shared moments that make Christmas feel so special to me,” Senator Collins reveals.

“One of my fondest Christmas memories is from childhood, going to my uncle’s house after Christmas dinner and spending time with my cousins — those moments shaped what the season means to me today.

“I wish you all an enjoyable, fun-filled Christmas full of relaxation, warmth, and time with your families. Cherish every moment together,” she added.
