LIMERICK’S craft sector was celebrated with a win for Ballinacurra knifemaker Hugo Byrne, who was presented with an RDS Emerging Maker Award.

He joins Ireland’s next generation of creative talent who received more than €140,000 in awards to support the transition from education to professional practice.

Judges said that Hugo “exemplifies sustainability and artistry”, creating culinary knives using gathered materials.

The awards ceremony was particularly historic, marking the 165th presentation of the prestigious Taylor Art Trust Award with a legacy spanning 165 years and over 590 awards. The top €10,000 prize was jointly claimed by artists Clara McSweeney and Vicky Ochala.
