LIMERICK City and County Council has signed an integrated design team contract as part of the Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Project.
The Council says this marks a significant step forward in its urban renewal plans, and the beginning of “an ambitious transformation aimed at enhancing the heart of Limerick’s city centre”.
The appointed design team, Egis Engineering Ireland Ltd, will lead the design and development of streetscapes, the Council said, while also focusing on improving the pedestrian experience, integrating green infrastructure, and fostering a welcoming environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
Welcoming the news, Mayor John Moran, said: “Who does not love our Milk Market, which is such a special place especially on Saturday mornings, but it can be much more, as can the whole area.”
“The signing of this contract is a clear signal of Limerick’s ambition. This is a project that I have been happy to have been involved in as it has progressed to this point, led by Limerick City and County Council’s Placemaking team.”
The Mayor said that “the vision for the Market Quarter and Cruises’ Street will reshape the heart of our city. It another piece in the jigsaw we are continuing to put together in redeveloping the city centre”.
“Limerick now has momentum and is delivering, turning our plans into action.”
Andrew Doyle, Egis Engineering Ireland director, added: “We are delighted to support Limerick City and County Council in realising its ambitious vision for the Market Quarter and Cruises Street. Egis is proud to play a central role in the design of this landmark project, and we look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the Council through detailed design and into construction.”
The proposed project is being delivered by Limerick City and County Council’s Place Making Department and funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) as well as the National Transport Authority (NTA), which the Council said is underlining the project’s importance as part of Limerick’s long-term vision for the city centre.
The Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Project is part of Limerick’s broader strategy to revitalise its urban core, strengthen its cultural identity, and promote a thriving city centre, the Council said.
