IRISH Chamber Orchestra opens its Winter Spring Season 2026 with a magical concert featuring the extraordinary cellist Abel Selaocoe at University Concert Hall on Tuesday February 3.
Journey to where music from different worlds finds a shared HOME. At its centre is Abel Selaocoe, cellist, vocalist, and creator, whose dazzling fusion of classical cello, African traditions, throat singing, percussion and absolute joy is captivating audiences worldwide. Whether improvising, directing his own works, or diving into Baroque repertoire, Selaocoe performs with electrifying spirit and magnetic presence.
With Alan Keary on bass and Bernhard Schimpelsberger on percussion, the Irish Chamber Orchestra becomes a powerful partner, driving the pulse of Selaocoe’s music, lifting Lerato, fueling Qhawe (Hero), and propelling the jubilant Ibuyile l’Africa (Africa is Back) and Kea Morata (I Love Them So).
ICO’s Nicola Sweeney is Guest Leader and co-directs this concert that crackles with connection. Janacek’s Suite for Strings bursts open with earthy rhythm that slides effortlessly into the glowing embrace of Lerato. Debussy’s Cello Sonata, full of colour, curiosity, and edge, sharpens the emotional contours of Qhawe (Hero).
Sibelius’s Romance offers a restful calm before Selaocoe lights a fire on Ibuyile l’Africa (Africa is Back), a full-throttle celebration of return and identity. Kea Morata (I Love Them So) closes the evening, as boundaries blur between classical and South African sound worlds, becoming one shared musical HOME.
