A CALL went out from Limerick City and County Council for rampant speeding and an alleged lack of pedestrian and cyclist safety along Castle Street in Limerick City to be tackled with urgency between the junction of Thomond Bridge, Verdant Place, and the roundabout.
Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara proposed a number of actions at January’s meeting of the Metropolitan District, held this past week.
Cllr Hickey-O’Mara’s asks for the Council to tackle the trouble speeding included a speed survey at Castle Street and Thomond Bridge, improved speed limit signage to be put in place to remind motorists of the reduced speed limit in the area, and a controlled crossing at the junction of Thomond Bridge and Verdant Place.
In response to the Soc Dems councillors queries, Director of Transportation at Limerick City and County Council, Patricia Liddy, said a speed limit survey in the area outlined by the councillor would be arranged with speed limit signage and road markings also to be put in place to help reduce speed.
“Verdant Place is currently closed for the past six months and is likely to remain closed for a further six months,” Ms Liddy told Cllr Hickey-O’Mara.
“This location was examined for a controlled crossing two years ago and it was found that there was insufficient pedestrian demand. Buildouts and tactile paving were installed then which had the effect of narrowing the road, reducing traffic speeds, and allowing safe crossing at this location.”
