NEARLY 10,000 families and individuals across Limerick have been supported with social housing over the past five years.

Limerick City and County Council said it has delivered 3,428 social houses between 2021 and the third quarter of 2025, providing secure accommodation supports to 9,200 individuals and families.

Another 450 social houses are also scheduled to be delivered across this year with an construction for an additional 650 homes expected to begin shortly, according to the Council.

Mayor John Moran said that “when it comes to housing, delivery is what matters”.

“We are looking to move in Limerick beyond plans and strategies and to delivering homes for families and individuals at pace and at scale. This means the right housing for each cohort of need, not a one size fits all solution which has not visibly worked to this point.”

He said the Council is “trying to align every part of the system to deliver. We are activating land, partnering with Approved Housing Bodies and trying to use our own capacity smarter and faster.”

The Mayor said he was “pleased” to have held “productive meetings” with Minister Jack Chambers, the Land Development Agency, the Housing Agency, and the European Investment Bank “to continue to attempt to unlock housing delivery here in Limerick”.

Meanwhile, construction continues across the city and county in areas including Speaker’s Corner and Castle Place in Newcastle West.

By 2030, it’s anticipated that there will be over 3,300 social homes at various stages of design and build across Limerick.

From 2022 to the third quarter of last year, 583 affordable housing supports were provided in Limerick through Approved Housing Bodies, private developer partnerships, the Land Development Agency, and national schemes including the First Home Scheme and the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant.

There is also a very strong pipeline from now out to 2030, with over 1,995 affordable homes at all stages of design and build, the Council said.

A number of major mixed tenure developments are also advancing in partnership with the Land Development Agency, including Colbert Quarter, with up to 4,000 homes planned. More than 200 homes at Carey’s Road will be lodged for planning later this year.

Construction of the first 250 homes in Mungret will also commence shortly, with capacity for more than 2,000 homes in total.

As part of Mayor Moran’s plans to deliver modular housing, the Council said, the local authority is also preparing to deliver such homes at scale using NSAI-certified modern methods of construction. It is hoped these modular homes can be delivered quickly enough to keep up with staggering current demand.

Council Príomh Chomhairleoir and Fianna Fáil councillor Catherine Slattery said that “every week, I meet families and individuals who are struggling to find a home, and I know how urgent the need is”.

“That is why these delivery figures matter. Over five years social housing solutions in Limerick provided some stability for over 9,000 people, removing the stress and uncertainty of having nowhere to call their own.”
