WHEN Munster captured the 2023 United Rugby Championship it was after a dramatic run of form that began in January.
Up to that point they struggled, and it was a shock when they bettered Stormers, 19-14 in the final in Cape Town.
It is unlikely that this can be repeated this season, but if the Reds come away with a win this Friday night in Scotstoun Stadium (7.45pm) one never knows.
Ahead of a month’s break in the competition, Glasgow top the table and they will be eager to maintain their good form and keep ahead of a chasing pack that includes Leinster (Munster are fifth).
Munster struggled to scrape a win at the weekend, relying on a late drop goal by Tony Butler to squeeze past Dragons in Cork.
Head coach Clayton McMillan was relieved.
“It was a hard-fought game and I’m really happy with the efforts of the side. JJ (Hanrahan) pulled out five minutes before the start, which threw us a bit; we gifted some soft tries. It wasn’t pretty, but we won the game with a bonus point,” he commented.
It is not the first time in his career that Gavin Coombes has shown his talent. The number eight helped his side out when he came off the bench to score a brilliant brace of tries.
There was some good news of late for the Edogbo family, with Seán (21) delivering a Man of the Match display on his debut with Munster and Edwin (23) receiving a call-up to the Ireland Six Nations squad.
On Leeside, Seán said: “I was very happy about how we played. I could feel the nerves at the warm-up but as the game started and I got into it I was fine.”
A two-year contract extension for Garryowen’s Brian Gleeson is also a welcome development.
