AS PART of a bank holiday weekend road safety and traffic enforcement campaign, road traffic Gardaí in Limerick caught one driver travelling at almost twice the legal limit just outside the city.

Gardaí carried out the enhanced roads policing campaign over the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday weekend between Thursday January 29 and Tuesday February 3.

Between those dates, a statement from An Garda Síochána said, Gardaí detected almost 3,500 motorists speeding nationwide, with over 800 on bank holiday Monday alone. 193 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, while 400 were detected using a mobile phone. Over 660 vehicles were seized by Gardaí over the long weekend, more than 50 per cent with no insurance.

Among the top speeds recorded over the weekend was a driver on the N18 in Ballinacurra Weston, clocked travelling at 173 km/h in a 100 zone.

It was the second highest speed recorded across the weekend, following only a driver found travelling 190km/h in a 100 zone in Aughamore, County Leitrim.
