Internationally acclaimed electronic music producer Om Unit will perform at Pharmacia Limerick on Friday 27 February, marking a significant milestone for the city’s burgeoning bass music scene.

The event, presented by Síbín Soundsystem, will showcase Om Unit’s Acid Dub Studies live set on Limerick’s only custom-built soundsystem, a project that came to fruition through local collaboration and craftsmanship.

Síbín Soundsystem emerged from the vision of two Limerickmen, Frankie O’Mahony of Downbeat Records and Ronan McMullen, who embarked on building their high-powered system in January 2025. Drawing inspiration from Jamaican soundsystem tradition, the pair researched speaker designs, amplification and technical specifications before turning their plans into reality.

The construction phase utilised facilities at Fab Lab on Sarsfield Avenue, part of the School of Architecture at University of Limerick, where precision CNC machines cut the wood components. The team then sought expertise from Conor Jones, owner of Cork’s Rise-Up Soundsystem, one of Ireland’s most powerful systems, who generously shared his knowledge and workspace.

Local tradesman Derek O’Sullivan provided professional joinery finishing before the team spent a further month testing drivers and amplifiers. The system launched in August 2025 with a street party at The Commercial.

Since its debut, Síbín has hosted numerous events across Limerick, curating sets spanning Caribbean and African music. The Om Unit performance represents the soundsystem’s first international booking as Downbeat Records expand their programming for 2026.

OM Unit has established himself as an electronic music innovator through persistent evolution and genre-defying production.

The English producer and DJ launched his project in the late 2000s, distilling breaks, techno, dubstep, ambient, jungle, footwork, and dub into a fluid take on electronic sound system music.

Under his recently retired ‘Philip D Kick’ alias, Om Unit pioneered stylistic links between jungle and footwork, inspiring a global movement of up-tempo bass music.

DJ Magazine shortlisted Om Unit for Best Producer and Best Remix, while BBC Radio 1, Boiler Room, Resident Advisor, and Rinse FM have featured his mixes.

As a DJ and live performer, Om Unit has made over 500 appearances across more than 30 countries, performing at venues from Montreux Jazz Festival to Dekmantel and Mysteryland.

His sound spans slow-motion beats to hardcore continuum darkness, up-tempo footwork patterns, and mature takes on acid, dub, breaks, and techno.

The journey so far contains a distinct lineage of innovative and playful takes on various musical tropes fashioned from experience, experimentation, and excitement. By consistently connecting fresh musical ideas with classic studio techniques, he has truly made an indelible mark on electronic music and remains here to stay.
