GARDAÍ seized more than €100,000 worth of suspected illegal drugs this past Saturday morning following a raid on a home in Limerick City.

According to a Garda statement, Gardaí attached to the Divisional Drugs Unit, operating out of Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick City, made the swoop as part of an intelligence-led operation targeting the sale and supply of drugs throughout the city on Saturday February 14.

Gardaí said that a home in the city was searched as part of the operation and that suspected cannabis herb worth in excess of an estimated €100,000 was found and seized by investigating officers.

The Garda statement said that a man aged in his 50s was arrested and detained following Saturday’s raid, and held at a Garda station in Limerick City under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

The man has since been charged in connection with the drug seizure and is expected to appear before Limerick District Court tomorrow (Monday) morning.

The drugs were to be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further analysis, and a Garda spokesperson said that investigations into the illegal cannabis find are still ongoing.

Gardaí said that the raid on the home in the city and the subsequent €100,000 cannabis seizure were carried out under Operation Tara, an “enhanced national anti-drugs strategy launched by the Garda Commissioner in July 2021”.

According to Gardaí, the function of Operation Tara is to “disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels — international, national, and local — involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, and local sale and supply of controlled drugs”.
