IN THE wake of Ireland’s hard-earned Six Nations home victory against Italy, there were plenty of plaudits for Jack Crowley.
He was introduced after 55 minutes and his presence turned the game in our favour by landing a conversion and penalty.
Crowley’s only regret was the kicking dead of a penalty that would have given Ireland at least a bonus point.
The ‘Jack or Sam (Prendergast)’ headlines have been the rugby writers’ dream over recent weeks and coach Andy Farrell appears to have had his fill.
“Do you know what, I might be talking out of school here,” he replied to one hack, “but in my opinion, for what’s gone on over the last year or something, especially with the keyboard warriors, I think people need to ask themselves, really, sometimes, ‘Are we Irish? Do we want people to do well or not?’”
Farrell, scarcely able to conceal his incredulity or anger, added: “It can be tough for these kids. I’ve seen it, toing and froing with both of them, and both of them are strong characters. It takes a lot to break kids like that. But I’ve seen it affect people. So the keyboard warriors on Twitter, or whatever you call it now, need to copy on and try and help these kids.”
There is no doubt that this issue has gone too far.
Ireland’s right wing Robert Baloucoune appears to have what it takes and his spectacular try in the second half was crucial to a positive outcome.
No doubt, he will be retained for the outing with England on Saturday, 2.10pm.
Another newcomer, Cormac Izuchukwu at seven, also had a fine game and is sure to be again on the starting blocks.
England will be all out to get the victory, and with home advantage, the Twickenham full house will certainly urge them on.
It is unlikely that Ireland will make many changes, but Crowley is in the mix!
