A HOMECOMING reception has been held to salute the landmark achievement of the Fitzgibbon/Sigerson Cup double achieved by the University of Limerick.

The Sigerson (football) team produced a composed display to overcome UCC in a fiercely contested final, securing a historic first title for the university at Croke Park.

Days later, the Fitzgibbon (hurling) side defeated local rivals Mary Immaculate College Limerick at the same venue to claim its 10th title.

Clare’s Brian McNamara and Colin Coughlan (Ballybrown) of Limerick were the respective captains.

All players – from 11 counties in football and eight in hurling across both squads balance inter-county commitments with full-time academic courses.

Professor Shane Kilcommins, President of University of Limerick, said “the extraordinary achievements of our Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup teams stand as a testament to the exceptional dedication, skill and unity that define our student athletes”.

“These players, who balance the demands of academia with inter-county commitments, embody the very highest values of this institution: resilience, leadership and an unwavering commitment to teamwork and sportsmanship.”

He added: “This double victory will inspire future generations, and we celebrate it with immense pride and appreciation.”

Jason Coffey, UL GAA Games Development Manager, added: “To win a first Sigerson Cup and retain the Fitzgibbon Cup in the same week was an incredible achievement, made even more special by having both games in Croke Park.”

“What stood out most was the culture within these groups –  the work ethic, the togetherness and the pride they have in representing UL.

“I am also hugely grateful for the support from across the campus, the student committee and the long-standing GAA Council members who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Without them, it would not be possible to manage a club of this size.”
