THERE is no ring-fenced Government funding at present for a library in Castletroy.

That’s according to Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Jerry Buttimer, in answer to a question from Limerick City Labour TD Conor Sheehan.

Deputy Sheehan asked the Minister via a parliamentary question if funding would be made available for a library in Castletroy.

The Minister told Deputy Sheehan that, at present, “the delivery of a library in Castletroy is primarily a matter for Limerick City and County Council”.

“The provision of library services including the development of library buildings is primarily a matter for Local Authorities in their capacity as library authorities under the Local Government Act 2001,” he said.

“Under the Libraries Capital Programme 2023-2027, my Department is investing €22.6m in 11 library infrastructure projects and a further €2.6m in 12 next-generation mobile libraries across the country. This programme is currently fully committed and there is no scope to accept any applications from councils for new library projects at present.

“My Department will be in contact with local authorities in respect of future calls under the Libraries Capital Programme in due course.”
