THE Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) welcomes back acclaimed pianist and Associate Artist Kristian Bezuidenhout for a landmark performance at the University Concert Hall on Friday March 6. The concert marks the thrilling conclusion of Beethoven’s complete piano concerto cycle, with the monumental Fifth Piano Concerto, widely known as the “Emperor”.
Bezuidenhout is a pianist who commands attention from the first note. His performance of Beethoven’s “Emperor” is fearless and electrifying, moving effortlessly from explosive brilliance to moments of hushed, lyrical intimacy. The concerto’s bold opening, dramatic contrasts and triumphant finale come alive with a sense of urgency that grips the listener throughout.
The Limerick programme also features Beethoven’s Octet for Winds in E-flat major, a sparkling work brimming with youthful wit and conversational charm, offering a vivid contrast to the grandeur of the concerto. Completing the programme is Fall Approaches by Irish composer Linda Buckley, a reflective and intimate piece that showcases the ICO’s continued commitment to championing contemporary Irish voices.
Together, the works trace Beethoven’s creative journey from playful elegance to commanding maturity, while offering audiences a rich emotional experience. Following the Limerick performance, the programme travels to Whyte Recital Hall, RIAM on Saturday March 7.
