A JUDGE was told that an arrested man allegedly spit in a Garda’s mouth while he was being restrained so a doctor could treat a cut to his head.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican was hearing an objection to bail for Ryan Keogh (30), of The Cottage, Main Street, Castleconnell, who was before Limerick District Court on charges of assaulting a police officer and threatening and abusive behaviour.

The court heard a Garda witness outline how, on December 31, 2025,  Gardaí encountered Mr Keogh with a cut to the back of his head on Station Road.

He was arrested after he allegedly began spitting at Gardaí, the court heard. While he was being detained at Henry Street Garda Station, a doctor was called to treat the injury to his head.

“He was struggling and began kicking out at Gardaí while the doctor was trying to treat the cut to the back of his head,” the witness said.

It’s alleged Keogh then began spitting again and it landed in a Garda’s “mouth and eye”.

The court was told that there were Garda concerns that the accused would not turn up to answer the charges against him if he got bail, due to the seriousness of the charge of assault, which carries a maximum of 12 years jail.

The witness agreed with the man’s solicitor that the accused was arrested on New Year’s Eve and that he was intoxicated.

“There was no further trouble the next morning when he had sobered up,” the defence representative said.

Judge Coolican said that the accused man “is entitled to the presumption of innocence” and admitted him to bail on condition that he obey a curfew between 10pm and 7am, sign on daily at Henry Street Garda Station, and live at the address which he had given the court.

He was remanded to appear again on March 10 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions on how the case will proceed.
