A JUDGE sitting in a Limerick court was told that a woman who stole beauty products and scented candles from a discount store was being prevailed upon to steal for other people.

Jane Power (34), with an address at Thomond House, Thomondgate,  Limerick City, pleaded guilty before the Limerick District Court to charges of theft.

The first instance was on October 9 last year, when the court heard Ms Power stole six Yankee candles and two bottles of laundry liquid.

The court heard the woman took the items from the Mr Price store at the Roxboro Shopping Centre and left without attempting to pay.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican was told the woman was identified on CCTV.

At the same shop on November 1, 2025, the court heard Ms Power paid for some items but left without paying for €19.99 worth of beauty products.

The court was also told that the woman was arrested on January 1 after being found intoxicated and stumbling on the footpath.

The woman’s solicitor, Darragh McCarthy, told the court that Ms Power was “highly intoxicated” and had become addicted to illicit substances.

“She was prevailed upon to take the items and they gave her nominal sums to feed her drug habit,” Mr McCarthy told the court.

“She has begun engaging in treatment and she apologises. She is very sorry,” Mr McCarthy said.

Judge Coolican heard that Ms Power has 67 previous convictions, 30 of them for theft.

She sentenced the woman to four weeks in jail.
