A PIONEERING women’s soccer player has passed away.
Pauline Maher of Punch Close and formerly of Roundwood, Rosbrien died after a short illness at University Hospital Limerick on Saturday.
Back in 1973, Maher became the first player from Limerick to score for the Republic of Ireland at senior level when she netted against Northern Ireland.
Other Limerick players who featured with the ROI around that era were Mary Gavin, Gerardine Grace, Mary Joyce, Freda Noonan and Marion Slattery.
Limerick United won back-to-back League of Ireland titles and the Women’s FAI Cup around this time too.
The manager was the late Frank ‘Junior’ Keane.
Pauline is mourned by her sisters Annette and Patricia, brothers-in-law Teddy and Paddy, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and neighbours.
