A NEW link road and a section of a long-awaited dual carriageway on the outskirts of Limerick City are set to open this coming Monday (March 9).

A statement from Limerick City and County Council confirmed that the new dual carriageway from the Cratloe Road Roundabout to the Knockalisheen Road Roundabout – which includes the Moyross Link Road – will open to traffic for the first time this coming Monday.

The roads will operate under traffic arrangements for the time being, while works on the larger road project continue.

The Council said that Monday’s opening “marks a major milestone in the ongoing programme to enhance connectivity, accessibility, and transport safety in the city’s northside”.

According to the Council, the partial opening of the new stretch of road network will “enable the next phase of works, including the full demolition and reconstruction of Ballynanty Rail Bridge”, which is slated for upgrade works, including new footpaths, and cycleways.

As works are ongoing, the Council said, the Knockalisheen Road will be fully closed, with traffic diverted via the new Moyross Link Road.

“Preparatory works will begin the week of March 9, with demolition of Ballynanty Bridge scheduled for March 27 and 28,” the Council said.

News of the opening has been lauded on the city’s north side, with an online post from the Moyross Community Enterprise Centre describing the new road connecting the community to the Northern Distributor Road as “welcome news”.
