INDEPENDENT councillor Jerome Scanlan has called for a safety review to be conducted on traffic and travel conditions on the R522Â road between Castlemahon Cross and Danganbeg in County Limerick.
Speaking at the Newcastle West district meeting for the month of March, Cllr Scanlan told the gathering that he is constantly getting representations fon the matter from people living in the locality.
He highlighted safety concerns before the meeting in relation to the sight lines for those trying to enter onto the road.
“People attempting to get out from the right-hand side as you travel to the south are having major issues,” Cllr Scanlan told the meeting.
Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Collins supported the motion and said he had also received representations from people in the area about their concerns. However, he did point out that the road in question is a regional road.
In response, Cllr Scanlan had a confession to make, saying:Â “I was on that road the other night and I actually broke the law because I wanted to get some idea of the traffic speed.”
Councillors then asked if this comment would make headlines in the Limerick Post.
“As long as you don’t use my name,” said Fine Gael councillor Liam Galvin, to the amusement of the chamber.
Putting the brakes on the chortling, Cllr Scanlan called for action from the Council to deal with “the level of speed” he himself witnessed on this stretch of West Limerick road.
The Council took the view that the road between the Castlemahon Cross and Danganbeg on the R522 was in good condition and that the matter should be brought to the attention of the GardaÃ.
“We have no Gardaà in the place, that’s another problem,” Scanlan opined. “What about a speed camera, that would certainly help.”
“Talk to Cllr Galvin about that,” came the reply from Council members.
